Memories Holguin Reviews

An awesome hotel just got better
My spouse and I visited Memories Holguin shore hotel for the 2nd time in 3 years even though we have visited Cuba more than 10 times. Formerly known as Riu Playa Turquesa, it is a 4 plus star hotel that really has earned its' rating. The property is charmingly upkept, the golden sand shorelines fantastic and the suites big, spotless and really pleasant. Even though we had been to this hotel 2 years prior, and originally did not notice a ton of change, the cuisine in the main dining suite has very much improved with an awesome variety of desserts and tropical fruit. The only down side was the 1 to 2 hour line ups to book the "specialty restaurants". There has to be a more smoooth way to book! The amusement in the open Air Plaza was excellent, particularly for anybody who loves to dance the night away. Everybody on personnel are courteous, polite and always smiling even when they're run off their feet. A very memorable thank you to irena in the main dining suite, who began off our days with a warm smile, a heart felt "ola" and café disadvantage leche. As coming back visitors, we were invited to an excellent lobster & steak shore supper, accompanied by excellent amusement. Really elegant! The addition of wireless internet in the hotel foyer is another welcome change, if only to check emails at the end of the day. While in Cuba, we always hire transfers, a vintage vehicle or Horse and buggy to visit close by villages where we have met a lot of residents, a lot of of which are Now friends and get to experience the ever evolving Cuba. We'll surely be coming back to Memories Holguin shore hotel, stellar.

Excellent place however.
This was our very first vacation to Cuba and our first hotel experience. We travelled April 10-17, 2015. The hotel is wonderful, the hospitality was fantastic and the suite roomy, spotless and pleasant. The climate in Cuba was pristine. We visited#140 and our deck scenery of the ocean was superb. This is a great thing as I had to spend much of the holiday there because of the fact of my hubby became very ill after lunching on the salad bar. The pharmacist and nurse in the medical centre were really supportive, the dr not so much. My hubby at last got to see a dr here at home and should recover promptly Now that he has medication (he is on day seven of his distress). I managed to locate a few things like chick peas and lentils and other bean dishes and also pickled things to eat. The meat, fish and chicken were all unexceptable and I do not eat French fries or onion rings which looked attractive great. The vintage vehicles were fun and we took a vacation to Guardalavaca in one. We also had a short tour in the Horse and cart to a hobby Farm and the little town of melelli. Back to the cuisine position, the line ups to set up reservations in the specialty was absurd and the pizza and pasta place was terrible in cuisine and service. We won't come back to this hotel primarily because of the cuisine position. We use vacationbay constantly to plan our vacations and it is essential that I share a truthful review for this purpose.

A charming week in the sunshine!
The vacation to Memories Holguin was just what the physician ordered after a completely pathetic atlantic Canadian winter. The personnel were charming and warm, the landscaping was flawless and well-cared for, the suites big and very well-upkept. The meals were completely okay. You pick up after the day of our arrival what you enjoy and what you do not. There was always a few new dishes to try out too, always themed after which kind of 'night' it was. Gigantic props to the pastry cook, though. I had one of the most amazing confectionaries I have ever had anywhere one night. It was some kind of Pineapple tart, and I topped it with a scoop of their actually decadent Coconut ice cream. Once in a while the Coconut is marked as vanilla, so have a tiny tester. It's seriously awesome. The brunch was also excellent. The dining suite personnel are amazing. I have been to functions at home and the quality of service is the precise same if not better than you would get from a catering company at home. We only managed to use one of our four specialty bookings since we did not book immediately. A gratuity: do not wait until after your orientation to reserve or you will not have any selection/there will be nothing left. We really hoped to go to the cuban restaurant since we heard it was great. Alas, there was no availability. We did eat at the intimate one night, and it was decent. We were not really that agitated though, since the cafeteria was completely okay. The shore was cute and small, however it was breezy daily. That meant there were restricted windows to swim and use the non-motorized water crafts. It was not a problem for us since the swimming pools were fantastic. I'm not sure if it's always breezy there or if it was just our week. I liked the breeze myself, since it stopped the 32'C climate from being muggy. A gratuity: you don't need to reserve your shore/pool recliners with a towel early in the morning in this hotel! There are a lot of recliners. It got really annoying to walk by completely unoccupied "booked" recliners in shaded spots. Always those shaded spots weren't reserved at all throughout the Point of the day when you would need shade/when the umbrella assisted. If nobody attempted to reserve recliners, then the shady spots could be shared and everybody would be gladder. I understand that it's a necessity at other hotels, however not here. We were always able to locate a lounger, however not always one in the shade. Coffee in the bar by the front desk is the most outstanding. The bar by the front desk is more 'drink bar' strength and mix, whereas the quick meal and the swimming pool bar are more what you would anticipate out at your common pub/nightclub. For instance, I had a margarita in the bar by the front desk and it was really strong and not sweet. I had one in the refreshment cafe, and it was very much sweeter. All depends on your taste! I loved the bar by the front desk beverages the greatest, myself. We did two tours and they were completely worth it. Holguin loco was an awesome City trip, and the 4x4 adventure was a lot more rural. If you would like some education/culture with your holiday, I certainly suggest getting off the hotel. Cuba is a really property and fascinating Country on the verge of a ton of change. Thanks, Memories. It was charming.

Wonderful hotel. However beware of the sand fleas if you favour shore to pools.
We travelled with our 8 year old son and a big group of 19. Well let's start with the check in. Quick and smoooth. We were a late arrival from ottawa and it was fast at the reception. But, it was a pretty Long wait for a cart to take us so the suite. They had carts parked that were not in use. If they had been running it would've been better than only two for four shuttle a lot of arrivals. The cuisine as a whole was great and seasoned well. We stuck to the cafeteria (okay variety) for the better part however did the mediterranean specialty which had a pleasant anti pasta cafeteria to start, great wine, and excellent pizza. We attempted to go to the cuban for lunch however they were out of overall everything. Tip the specialty réservations for the week start at 9:30. The resort was close to capacity so the lineup to book them was gigantic and we waited until Tuesday however there wasn't much available. The refreshment cafe was decent, I really loved the fajitas. Recall where you are! Be accomodating and do not be inefficient, majority of the folks working there work very tough for what they have and are proud of their Country and the resort. There is always something tasty to be found however if you have a little bit of everything at every meal you will get tired of the cuisine. The amusement at night was excellent. The house band and performances in the theater were really nice. Hats off to will smith lol. He was excellent fun to dance with. The bar near the front desk had a great vibe and the coffee there was awesome. The suites were alright and the mattresses were pleasant. Our maid elisabeth did a marvelous job keeping it spotless and ensuring we had extra towels. It was pleasant to meet her. We were in 750 which was not too far from the shore and pools with a convenient path up to the main building, cafeteria, and tennis courts. Romero and poppy at the shore hut for ocean activities were so courteous and really compensated for the fact that we could not stay at the shore daily because of the sand fleas. In fact after one afternoon getting eaten alive we only came back for the hobiecats, pedalos, and pedal boats. The scuba diving was awesome with many colourful fish and a wonderful coral reef. The hotel really needs to address this as the oceanfront is wonderful. Fortunately the six cascading pools and everyday activities there kept us busy when we were not doing ocean activities. The personnel are really courteous and wish to make your stay excellent. We went on the double decker shuttle to Guardalavaca shore which was so pretty. If you follow it to the end to the left there is a corridor up the escarpment top where there are some pleasant restaurants with georgeous scenes. We feasted for 30 cuc and the shuttle was 5 cuc come back. We also walked into the community to meet the residents and give away some toys and children clothing. A Real eye opener for our nine year old. As a whole it was a pleasant vacation, however I so wanted to b able to enjoy the shore. For that reason I wouldn't return until the resort deals with the flea issue.

Question
Our 1St time to Cuba, we thought it was an awesome hotel. Met friends who have done a ton of traveling & they said Memories was one of the most amazing they had ever been to. We thought we got our monies worth. Yes, we lost water for a 24 hour period however so did other hotels. It was an annoyance however did not affect us as we could clean in the am & were out for the day anyway. Water was back on when we got back to suite to get ready for supper in the late afternoon. The meals were monotonous however we did not starve to death or lose any weight. Lol. Personnel was fantastic, suite always spotless & fresh towels. We would return again in a second!

Really pleasant!
We travelled as a party of ten including 5 children and one senior. First and foremost, the reception desk was really smoooth. We requested joined suites and they followed through with it (last year our other hotel didn't). If you aren't a walker, then this May not be the place for you, but the hotel is well spread out and excellent for getting exercise, just be arranged when packing for a pool or shore outing. I found the personnel to be very courteous, sociable, and the two general supervisors were always around ensuring that everybody was happy. As another veviewer pointed out, there are a lot of free tours, scuba diving, horseback rides, and of course Catamaran rides, pedal boats and kayaks (be at the towel hut at 9:30 sharp to get the cat reserved and attempt to get a morning booking as it gets breezy in the afternoon and you May not get out). I liked the fact that there were a lot of pools to pick from and you never felt like you were packed in. The bar staff and the lower pool really know how to get a party going however you could also go to the swimming pool at the top for a quieter experience. We prefered the cafeteria over the specialty however specialty is difficult to book. It fills up promptly. We managed to get a meal at the pizza and pasta place however quite sincerely, the cafeteria catered to everyones needs. Bring children clothes and toys. The personnel truly appreciate the presents. We would return for sure.

Like coming home.
My hubby and I visited March 10-17th. It has been five years since we were here last and we were looking forward to our visit. We weren't let down as it truly was like visiting an old friend. Not a ton of changes, and if there were, they were for the better. We both spotted that the cuisine variety (particularly confectionaries) in the cafeteria have improved. We were in the 400 area which suited us just okay (closer to the shore than the hotel foyer). We're shore folks and could find our spot Under a Tree every morning. I found the shore very busy this specific week and realized quite always that there were always recliners available around the upper pools. As always our suites were kept flawless (special thanks to dania). We could meet our maid on a few occasions and she was an absolute darling. Both my hubby and I spotted that the largest change is that the main foyer is Now "the place" at night, but, I believe this is because of the availability of wireless internet as nearly everybody was playing with one device or another. You are on holiday people. The front line personnel at this facility are amazing and I do not think this is just since we were coming back visitors. Always supportive, always smiling and greeting you wherever you happen to meet. Aisel and yusimi are definitely assests to this facility and we're not the only guests who feel this way. I'd also like to make special mention to our waiters at the shore restaurant who worked there every lunch hour. These girls never stopped smiling allthough they appeared to be run off their feet some days. After one visit they knew what you loved to drink and nearly had it poured before you were seated - really remarkable! As coming back visitors (allthough it had been years) we were invited to the most marvelous supper. It was honestly an awesome supper with awesome amusement. It was really remarkable and we felt really honored to be part of it. We feel that this hotel can only resume to improve if the supervisor continues on the same course it is on. If I can offer one part of tip it would be to improve the washrooms in the main foyer. Quite always this is the first place guests head to when arriving and they could really use a facelift (along with shower gel and paper) - first impressions are lasting impressions. We're simple to please - great cuisine, spotless suites and courteous personnel - what more could one ask. We'll surely be coming back. Jackie

Marvelous unwinding hotel
We were in this hotel from April 7 to April 14th 2015. Suites are pleasant - cuisine is great. Monotonous - however that can be a great thing. We enjoyed 3 specialty restaurants - could not get into the seafood which was a let down - but the other 3 were all great. Amusement in this hotel was awesome. There were bands at night - a 13 part steel band one afternoon at the shore and then at the swimming pool, games and competitions if you so pick. Do not miss the synchronized swimming performance - awesome. Only bummer was that there is really little shade at the swimming pool and visitors save their chairs all day - so those of us who do not pick to hog a seat all day - really could not spend time at the swimming pools. Always shade at the shore and seats available - however discouraging to have to keep leaving gratuities to keep getting seats various times in a day. Personnel were awesome and courteous. Do not fall for the thrill of winning Memories peso's when you win at the sports. It was a little of joke when it took 80 of those peso's to get a 50 cent card chain. The towel girl was also into making some extra cash so beware. The presumed book exchange - she does not' want your books however wants a peso (1. 36) for a book. Not right. As a whole we loved our time. One week is enough. The vacations have gotten to be outrageously costly - and as this was our 15th or so vacation to Cuba - very little we had not done before. Wonderful to walk near the ocean past the hotel. - wear great footware as you walk along Coral. We were in a suite in the 400 area (suggested by another reviewer) and it was pristine - close to everything. Be aware of the stairs - can not really be avoided. And there are many them. But the scenes are awesome. Courteous personnel, marvelous pools and sea make this an excellent place. The 60 minutes a day of free wireless internet in the main foyer was a gigantic bonus. And it worked quite well. We took a Horse and buggy lift - really pleasant. Sadly they really whip their horses. Which disgusted us. We have horses and they do not need the treatment they were getting there. Other than that and the fact there was no English on that vacation - it had a pleasant visit to a small hobby Farm and we did enjoy it. Just hopefully they do not all treat their creatures that way.

You have to try their tours!
The resort is well situated, and I found a lot of cool scuba diving spots, with wonderful corals and vibrant Tropical fish. What I enjoyed most about this hotel, other than the cuisine, the quality of the staff attention, the swimming pools and the shore, was the tours. They were the high points of my holiday in Cuba. There are a lot of tours that the hotel provides, and I did 3 of them. The first one was a tour to a cenote close to the resort and the greatest thing about it was that it was free (obviously, a gratuity was provided for the awesome service). The cenote is a 20 short walk from the hotel and you can see Wild bats (not alarming, however really thrilling). Throughout my second tour, I went horseback riding and I was the most marvelous experience of my life, since you were doing it in a wonderful Park and had a marvelous scenery of the hills and Lakes. The last tour I did was unforgettable, and me and my family went on a moped to visit Guardalavaca, for 5 hours. The cost was veryyy budget conscious and certainly more worth it than the costly packages that sunwing provides. If you are going to this hotel, certainly try one of these tours! They do not advertise them a lot, so when I went there, I did not even know that they were accessible. If you go to this hotel, you can reserve a place for the tours at the towel kiosk or contact any entertainer. Certainly worth it :)
